By now you probably know that Garmin has released its new $150 Sport tracker for the next-generation Garmin X1, but what if you don’t have one?
If that’s you, here’s how to get your hands on one for $149.99.
Read moreWe’ve been hearing for some time that Garmin had been working on a new $100/£95 Sport tracker.
At the time of writing, the company is not offering any further details about the device, but it’s not hard to imagine it could be the next entry in its line of high-end trackers, with a price tag of $100 or less.
While the first generation Garmin X series was a good value for the money, it had a number of issues that put it into a niche market.
It didn’t have GPS capability, and while it did have an NFC reader, it was not the same as the GPS capabilities of the iPhone and Android phones of the day.
While it did support Bluetooth connectivity, the Garmin X2 didn’t support the Bluetooth Low Energy standard, and so didn’t provide any connectivity options to use it as a Bluetooth Low-Energy accessory.
The Garmin X3 was the first X series device to include Bluetooth Low energy support, and it included Bluetooth Low audio, Bluetooth Low power and NFC functionality.
Garmin’s latest X3 device, the X4, also supports Bluetooth Low Audio, NFC and Bluetooth Low Power, but the only thing it does is connect to the X1 through Bluetooth Low powered headphones.
The Garmin X4 and X5 both offer Bluetooth Low charging, but they’re priced significantly higher than the X3, which starts at $99.99, while the X5’s price is $139.99 and the X6’s $139 (although it does have GPS support, so that’s not a big deal).
In the meantime, you’ll have to settle for the Garmin Sport tracker, which has an attractive design and an attractive price tag, as well as some pretty good features.
If you’re interested in the Garmin Connect smartwatch, you can pre-order it right now for $129.99 (as of this writing, it’s currently available on Amazon).
